Students enjoy browsing the books at the book fair!
MY REFLECTION
WHAT:
We have a book fair in the library every November/December and then again in in June right before school gets out to promote summer reading. Book fairs fall under Domain 4 of the Danielson book Enhancing Professional Practice: A Framework for Teaching (2007). It falls under Service to School. It also falls under Domain 2: "Establish a culture for investigation & love of literature."
SO WHAT:
The book fairs are so important because they promote a culture of books and love of books and reading with students.
They are also important because I am able to use much of the profits to give away books to students who have financial situations that do not allow them to buy books. I also share the profits with teachers buying every language arts teacher a big stack of their "wish list" books and every other teacher at least one book they have "wished" for using our teacher wishlist program.
NOW WHAT:
I learned from this past book fair that I need to coordinate the book fair to run at the same time as the student-led parent conferences. This book fair came up about $3,000 less in merchandise sold from the previous year's book fair and I think it is due to the timing of it this year not being during the student-led conferences.
In this video students get real-life practice with math and money skills as they help out with cash register during the book fair!
Thanks, Heather! As a teacher-recipient of a "big pile of books" I was thrilled to share these books with students in my language arts class.
